CARACTERIZACIÓN DE FRUTOS DE TRES VARIEDADES DE MACADAMIA (Macadamia integrifolia) DE BELLA VISTA, DEPARTAMENTO DE ITAPÚA, PARAGUAY ¹

Abstract
This study was developed at the laboratory of the Departamento de Producción Agrícola, Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias, of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, located in San Lorenzo city at the University Campus. The purpose was to describe the features of the fruit of three varieties of Macadamia integrifolia, Haes 344, Haes 741, and Aloa, thus finding out the differences among them. The Macadamia plantation where the fruits for this study were collected is owned by Granja Panta Rhei, located in Bella Vista, Itapúa District, Paraguay. The experimental design applied in the laboratory was «purely at random» using three treatments which correspond to the three varieties studied. Out of the total collected, a sample of 70 fruits of each variety was selected at random. The outcome obtained shows that, under the conditions of the experiment, the Haes 344 variety presents the following characteristics: it is the greatest in height and diameter of the fruit, in weight of the fruit and of the core, in thickness of the core, as well as in the percentage of the core, and the least in the percentage of almond. The largest percentage of almond is found in the Haes 741 variety. As for the commercial production directed to export and considering the demands of the foreign market, the Haes 344 variety is the most appropriate, since it meets the qualifications required by said market. As for the domestic production of Macadamia considering the percentage of almonds, the Haes 741 variety is the most appropriate.

 

Resumen
El presente trabajo se desarrolló en el laboratorio del Departamento de Producción Agrícola, de la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias, de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción, Campus Universitario de San Lorenzo. El objeto fue describir las características del fruto de tres variedades de Macadamia integrifolia, Haes 344, Haes 741 y Aloa, y así obtener las diferencias entre las variedades. El cultivo de Macadamia donde las frutas fueron recolectadas para el estudio, pertenece a la Granja Panta Rhei, ubicado en Bella Vista, Departamento de Itapúa. El diseño experimental aplicado en laboratorio fue el de enteramente al azar con tres tratamientos, correspondiendo los tratamientos a las tres variedades empleadas, donde del total cosechado se extrajo al azar una muestra de 70 frutas de cada variedad. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que en las condiciones del experimento, la variedad Haes 344 presenta mayor altura y diámetro del fruto, peso del fruto y carozo, grosor del carozo, porcentaje de carozo, y menor porcentaje de almendra. El mayor porcentaje de almendra presenta la variedad Haes 741. En cuanto a la producción comercial para fines de exportación y atendiendo las exigencias del mercado externo, la variedad Haes 344 es la más conveniente, puesto que posee las características requeridas para dicho mercado. Para la producción comercial interna de Macadamia atendiendo el porcentaje de almendra la variedad Haes 741 es la más conveniente.
